Rosetta Stone Foundations
Gifted students are cognitively ready for advanced language study, which can be a tremendous benefit later in school—and life. That’s why Duke TIP has partnered with Rosetta Stone to offer Rosetta Stone Foundations, a special version of the popular language immersion course designed for students in grades K–12 and available only from a select number of educational organizations. We offer it only to members of a Duke TIP talent search.
Rosetta Stone Foundations features interactive activities that build language naturally. Core lessons introduce reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. As students complete the interactive core language lessons, they unlock the ability to practice their language skills through games, activities, and stories—all keyed to their learning progress.
The stories—written and narrated by native language speakers—are structured to supplement the language training lessons, and students also have the chance to receive a rating on their pace and accuracy after recording themselves reading the stories. The games section matches activities with learning progress: as students learn more and more of a language, the vocabulary used in games and activities becomes more sophisticated, and new activities appear.
Rosetta Stone uses a dynamic immersion method that creates an interactive language-learning environment. Students are surrounded with words, images, and voices of native speakers, allowing them to progress naturally from words and phrases to sentences and conversations, building a natural and rapid skill set at a personalized pace. Using auditory, visual, and kinesthetic modes of learning, the software requires students to actively demonstrate understanding through speaking, reading, and writing, ensuring that they begin to think and speak in their new language from the very beginning.
Rosetta Stone also differentiates instruction for gifted learners using adaptive recall. This feature offers review activities for each lesson at intervals determined by a student's individual progress. When a student exceeds the program's expectations, the review gets pushed out further. Should the student fall short of performance benchmarks, the review is introduced sooner. These adaptive recall sessions help students transfer what they have learned in previous lessons to long-term memory.

Who is Rosetta Stone for?
Rosetta Stone Foundations is designed for independent study, so it is ideal for students who are self-motivated, disciplined, and love learning. It is also meant for gifted students who are trying to learn a language for the first time or advance their fluency. If you’re worried that it won’t be enough of a challenge, given what you already know about the language, view course content (PDF) to ensure that the course provides an appropriate challenge.
Though Rosetta Stone Foundations is designed for students to work independently, some students choose to find a mentor in the local area to assist them. This mentor can be a parent, relative, teacher, or tutor, but it should be someone who can aid the student. For example, if you have trouble defining goals, find a mentor who can help guide you through that process and create a feasible schedule for the course. TIP does not assist in choosing a mentor—that is the student’s responsibility.
