Laboratory and Classroom Safety Agreement

Please understand that the safety guidelines given below are general expectations for all Staff and students participating in Duke TIP lab activities. As the nature of activities varies by class, the Duke TIP Instructor, along with other staff, will provide additional safety instructions and guidelines specific to each activity. Failure to observe basic safety instructions can result in serious harm to yourself and/or others!

  • Wait for instructions from your Instructor and/or staff before gathering any chemicals or using any equipment. Use equipment only as directed by the Instructor and/or staff. Please report any damaged or defective equipment to your Instructor.
  • Become familiar with emergency response procedures before beginning any activity. This includes, but is not limited to, the location of the first aid kit, fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and eye wash equipment, as well as the location of exits.
  • Always engage in safe behavior (no horseplay, running, yelling, etc.).
  • Do not eat, drink, or smell any chemical.
  • Do not eat, drink, or chew gum in the lab area.
  • Do not mix or shake chemicals unless directed to do so by the Instructor and/or staff.
  • Dispose of waste products as directed by the instructor. Keep in mind that not all chemicals can be poured down a drain. Do not throw any materials in a wastebasket unless directed by the instructor.
  • Wear appropriate clothing (long pants and enclosed shoes). Students with long hair should be prepared to tie hair back and out of the face each day.
  • Safety goggles, lab coats or aprons, and gloves will be provided and are to be worn as directed by the instructor and/or staff. Your instructor may have additional clothing requests based on the activity.
  • Report broken glass or equipment, or spilled chemicals to an instructor and/or staff immediately. Do not attempt to clean up a spill or broken glassware without instructions from the Instructor or TA.
  • Listen carefully for warnings about sharp objects such as scalpels or hobby knives. Always cut away from yourself and others. Directions will be given and must be followed for the proper procedure and areas where these tools may be used.
  • Handle all living organisms or preserved specimens in a respectful manner. Students working with live animals will be given additional safety guidelines for their protection and the protection of these animals.
