In order to fully participate in eStudies, students will need:
- access to an email account for essential communications from TIP—a special TIP email account will be provided for students to use during the term, but a personal or family address is used for pre- and post-term communication.
- speakers or headphones to hear instructors during live meetings, and a microphone to participate—a webcam is recommended
Students have the option to participate via text chat, but a USB headset with microphone and a webcam are recommended.
These technical requirements apply to all courses in the eStudies Program. Some courses have additional technical recommendations. Please see the course description for full details.
- Computer running one of the following operating systems:
- Window 7 or newer
- Mac OSX 10.10 or newer
- Select courses can be completed using a ChromeOS device, such as a Chromebook. See specific course descriptions for details.
- Mobile devices cannot be used to complete the eStudies program.
- 1 GB RAM available
- 2 GHz or faster processor
- Consistently reliable internet with at least 2k kbps available bandwidth
- Chrome browser, latest two versions, with cookies enabled
- Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player(version 11.2 or higher)—both are free to download
- Reliable access to Google and the Google domain, if attending eStudies in a country that restricts web access
If students encounter difficulties with accessing their course, live meetings, online textbooks, or TIP-provided email, they should first contact their instructors. Guides and technical support documents can also be found on the eStudies portal at TIPonline.duke.edu.
If students are having difficulty with their hardware or with software unrelated to TIP-provided course tools, they will need to seek technical assistance from the computer or software manufacturer.
This seven-week program for seventh through tenth graders takes place during the summer. Students join an online class of twenty-four and are led in high school- or college-level coursework by an expert instructor who oversees discussions, live video meetings, and peer-to-peer interaction.
