Digital Citizenship Policy
With electronic access, comes a responsibility to use all devices appropriately. The Digital Citizenship Policy is for all participants, families, and staff engaging in Duke TIP programs and is an extension of the Duke TIP Community Standard. The policy serves as a resource to help participants, families and staff maintain safety and privacy as they access the Internet or interact in online environments while at Duke TIP. The student electronics policy is different for each of Duke TIP’s programs.
For the parents of all program participants
Please keep in mind that it is impossible for Duke TIP staff to maintain ubiquity in monitoring a student’s use of electronics, including the content a student may access. As digital citizens, students are responsible for their own actions at all times. Duke TIP will respond to incidents as we become aware of them; however, we cannot offer comprehensive supervision in this area.
Please speak with your student about appropriate conduct with regard to the use of electronics, and instruct your student to inform a staff member if another student is sharing material that makes the student or others uncomfortable, or is otherwise using electronics inappropriately. Parents are solely responsible for monitoring their student’s activity on social media platforms.
Respect and protect myself and others
Digital citizens demonstrate ethical Internet behavior and practice digital etiquette; therefore I will:
- Refrain from posting/sending/sharing images, videos, or information that could be perceived as disrespectful or inappropriate because information online is public and permanent and a reflection of myself, my family, and Duke TIP.
- Avoid engaging with or responding to disrespectful or inappropriate online posts, messages, images, or videos and report instances to a Duke TIP staff member if at any time I feel uncomfortable, notice any suspicious activity, or experience instances of bullying, harassment, or inappropriate language or content.
- Refrain from visiting websites, groups, or discussion boards that are degrading, discriminatory, or inappropriate in any way.
- Respect other people’s privacy when online by not going into their personal online spaces without invitation, impersonating others, or creating false accounts for misuse of any kind.
- Refrain from sharing personal information and scheduled times or specific locations of activities that have not yet happened.
- Be responsible in the management of usernames and passwords created for Duke TIP purposes.
- Abide by Duke TIP’s policies regarding personal electronic use in both academic and residential settings and adhere to program site usage regulations as explained by Duke TIP staff.
Respect and protect intellectual property
Digital citizens understand it is a wrong to damage or steal someone else’s digital work, property, or identity and protect others’ digital property; therefore I will:
- Adhere to copyright laws and fair use guidelines, refraining from using copyrighted work without permission from the owner; always credit the owner of the original work. Seek the help of a Duke TIP staff member or supervisor if unsure whether something is copyrighted.
- Refrain from making unauthorized changes to or vandalizing any websites, groups, or discussion boards and refrain from distributing or downloading music, movies, or games in a way that violates licensing agreements.
Respect and protect the Duke TIP experience
Digital citizens understand that the Internet and social media are powerful tools but will seek to use them properly; therefore:
- Before, during and after TIP, I will maintain appropriate online boundaries with staff and other students across all platforms.
- During TIP, I will inform a staff member if another student is sharing material that makes me or others uncomfortable, or is otherwise using electronics inappropriately.
- After TIP, I will discontinue use of TIP-sponsored platforms, simulations, and online projects.
Additionally, if I bring a device to TIP, I will:
- Aim to create a community of inclusivity by primarily communicating with staff and other students interpersonally during the program rather than through electronic devices.
- Not connect or communicate with staff via social media platforms.

Academic Adventures give fourth, fifth, and sixth graders the opportunity to explore fascinating subjects not found elsewhere, deepen their knowledge of a favorite field, and meet other gifted students. Courses cover a range of subjects and are offered by Duke TIP at three different college campuses, as well as at partner locations across the country.
