Nurse Assistant

The Nurse Assistant supports the Site Nurse to provide basic medical care for students and staff as well as administer medications to the students per their parents’ and physicians’ instructions. The Nurse Assistant is supervised by, and works collaboratively with the Site Nurse to establish and maintain the on-site medical room. The position may require communication with healthcare providers and students’ parents. Primary duties include reviewing student medical forms; providing support for the Site Nurse to oversee the administration of prescription and over the counter (OTC) medications the students have brought with them to the site; conferring with parents; monitoring student illnesses/injuries; and maintaining a clean and organized on-site medical room. The Nurse Assistant is a member of the Extended Administrative Team and is required to arrive on site several days before the program begins. The Nurse Assistant assists the Site Nurse with staff orientation and training related to medical issues. The Nurse Assistant responsibilities may include morning, evening, and night commitments. The Nurse Assistant has the equivalent of one day off each week, to be scheduled in conjunction with the program, the Site Nurse, and the On-Site Director.


Preference is given to candidates with a health care background. Candidates for Nurse Assistant position who are licensed as a Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician’s Assistant must be so licensed in the state for which they are applying to work with Duke TIP. Current CPR and first aid certifications are required. Excellent organizational and communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently as well as in a team setting are required. Experience working with children and young adults is preferred. Previous work in a school or summer residential program environment is helpful. Applicants must possess a genuine interest in the academic, social, and emotional growth of adolescents, exhibit maturity and a positive attitude, and be willing to serve as a role model for students. There is a driving requirement for this position. Eligible drivers must possess a valid driver’s license, be at least 21 years old, have an approved driving record on file, and be willing to drive students in Duke TIP vehicles (cars, minivans, 8-passenger SUVs).
