The 7th Grade Talent Search is open to current seventh-grade students (or eighth-grade students who skipped the seventh grade) who qualify through one of three methods:

  1. Scoring at or above the 95th percentile on an accepted grade-level national standardized achievement or abilities test
  2. Scoring at or above the 95th percentile on a state assessment
  3. Scoring 125 or above (full scale or composite) on an accepted IQ test

Please note:

  • Students only need to meet the criteria on one accepted subtest to be eligible for the program.
  • Students may qualify using scores from any time in the past two years. If 2017–2018 sixth-grade test results for your state haven’t been released by September 2018, we recommend using 2016–2017 fifth-grade scores.

You can use our look-up tool to find accepted tests, subtests, and scores to see if your student qualifies.

If you believe your student qualifies but can't find the test you're looking for, please email us at qualifying_test@tip.duke.edu with the test, subtest, and score in question, and we'll let you know if the test is accepted.

4th–6th Grade Talent Search participants

Former Duke TIP 4th–6th Grade Talent Search participants who took the optional above-grade-level test (i.e., the EXPLORE or PSAT 8/9) are automatically qualified to enroll in the 7th Grade Talent Search. But you do need to officially enroll.

Participants who did not take the EXPLORE or PSAT 8/9 test must provide a qualifying test score as described.

Students qualify for the 7th Grade Talent Search by scoring at or above the 95th percentile on a grade-level standardized test. Enrollment provides benefits that last through the end of high school, including the opportunity to take the ACT or SAT, specialized publications, college prep advice, and access to educational programs.
