Changes for 2017–2018
There's a new testing schedule from the College Board and an expanded enrollment period. Get the details on these changes and more below. We'll continue to update this information as more details are available.
This year’s regular talent search enrollment period will be longer than in previous years, opening on August 1, 2017, and closing on April 30, 2018. There will be no late enrollment period.
The fees will remain the same this year: $75 ($30 for a fee grant student).
ACT or SAT test registration
As part of the student’s talent search enrollment, Duke TIP also registers the student for either the ACT or SAT. This is called a 1Step registration.
The College Board, which administers the SAT, will no longer offer a January SAT. January has been one of the most popular test dates for families, so students will now need to test on an earlier SAT test date when possible, or change to the February ACT.
Earlier test dates encouraged
While there are more test dates to choose from this year, students are encouraged to select an early test date so that there are no delays in talent search benefits. The recommended earlier test dates are bolded in the table below.
Identify students earlier
Educators are encouraged to identify students as soon as possible so that families have time to meet the deadlines for the earlier test dates.
Summer programs impact
Students who test after February and qualify for TIP’s Summer Studies Program or eStudies Program will likely receive their scores after the summer program applications open. Because summer programs fill quickly, testing after February may preclude a student from participating the summer after seventh grade. However, students who do qualify for summer program opportunities will remain eligible to apply in future summers. Once eligible, always eligible!
Recognition ceremonies impact
Students must take the ACT or SAT by the end of March 2018 to receive an invitation to attend a recognition ceremony, should they achieve qualifying scores. Those taking the ACT or SAT after March who achieve qualifying scores will receive a medal in the mail in the summer.
Students who enroll using a paper application will be able to choose one of four test dates (December and February ACT; November and December SAT). If a student would like to select another test date than these four listed, they must enroll online, instead of using a paper application.
Students who enroll through our online enrollment will be able to choose a test date from one of the ten dates below.

Deadlines are midnight eastern time.
*Summer Programs—Because summer programs fill quickly, testing after February may preclude a student from participating the summer after seventh grade. However, students who test after February and achieve a qualifying score will remain eligible to apply in future summers. Once eligible, always eligible! Check out the application periods for the Summer Studies Program and eStudies Program.
**Recognition Ceremonies—Students must take the ACT or SAT by the end of March to receive an invitation to attend a recognition ceremony, should they achieve a qualifying score. Duke TIP does not receive scores from tests taken after March in time to invite eligible students to ceremonies. However, students who test after March and achieve a qualifying score will be mailed a medal in the summer.
SAT test center
If your school has historically been a designated January SAT test center, and you want to continue serving as an SAT test center, we suggest that you please become a December SAT test center, if that works with your school’s availability.
