A major grant by Longfellow Real Estate Partners created a unique Durham-based community partnership between Duke TIP, Durham Technical Community College, the Durham Chamber Legacy Foundation, and the City of Durham. This partnership was designed to help develop a local pipeline of future leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Each grant partner used its funds to provide academic resources and financial aid to promising Durham-area students pursuing STEM-related fields of study. Students in grades four through twelve and in college benefited from the grant.
Duke TIP used its grant to expand STEM-related educational programs and to increase the financial aid available to students in those programs. One program made possible thanks to this partnership was Adventures in STEM, a free daylong academic enrichment program for rising fifth and sixth graders in Durham. Course curriculum was chosen to challenge these gifted students and to enhance their discovery and critical thinking skills.
