The Instructional Counselor aids the Instructor in all areas of instruction and classroom management for Field Studies. This person will assist with classroom discussions, group activities, field trips, projects, presentations, and individual student questions. Academic duties are delegated by the Instructor. In addition to instructional duties, Instructional Counselors are responsible for assisting in the planning and supervising of student residential activities. Instructional Counselors’ responsibilities include day, evening, and night commitments, with approximately twelve working hours of time off per week.

A bachelor’s degree and some concentrated study in subject areas relevant to the specific field study is required. Experience supervising students and delivering programming in a residential setting is strongly preferred. Teaching or tutoring experience is helpful, as is staff or participant experience with programs for the academically gifted. Applicants must possess a genuine interest in the academic, social, and emotional growth of adolescents, exhibit maturity and a positive attitude, and be willing to serve as a role model for students. There is a driving requirement for all domestic Field Studies Instructional Counselor positions. Eligible drivers must possess a valid US or Canadian driver’s license, be at least twenty-one years old, have an approved driving record on file with at least three years of driving history, and be willing to drive Duke TIP vehicles. There is also a CPR requirement. Please work with the main office to complete this requirement. Instructional Counselors are required to live at the program site and sleep in their assigned room each night. Outside visitors are not permitted. For positions traveling outside the United States a valid passport is required and meet all visa and travel requirements.
