Group Leader

The Group Leader is the chief administrator of each program site and is responsible for smooth and efficient program operations. The Group Leader reports to and works with a Duke TIP Site Supervisor from TIP's main office on components including student activities, staff training, classroom and instructional matters, conduct matters, staff performance, site finances, and logistical coordination with host institutions. The Group Leader maintains high visibility within the program, attending all events, activities, and field trips, observing classes, and leading staff meetings. The Group Leader is the main parent contact during the program. Group Leaders are employed only at non-campus based sites. Housing and meals are provided on site.

Job Duties


  • Must attend administrative training weekend prior to program start

  • Plan and lead orientation

  • Manage finances for the program site; maintain a detailed financial log

  • Supervise distribution of and inventory return of all program materials

  • Enforce all program policies and ensure program procedure adherence to support the safety of students and staff; report all incidents and concerns

  • Communicate with parents as needed regarding conduct, medical, academic, and social concerns; document communications

  • Manage program operations, including but not limited to mail, vehicles, materials, fieldtrips, and student arrival and departure

  • Interface with host campus representative regarding program logistics

  • Oversee the implementation of the residential curriculum including managing social and recreational programming

  • Evaluate and report as directed at the end of the program

  • Ensure that appropriate arrangements for payment, transportation, meals, and risk management are in place

  • Assist with driving and student supervision on field trips

  • Review student medical forms, document students requiring special care, monitoring or supervision

  • In collaboration with the nurse, document and monitor the administration of medications as indicated by physician’s orders on student medical forms

  • Oversee the details of program opening and closing

Staff Supervision

  • Duties include full-time live-in day, evening, night and weekend commitments with 24 hours off per week

  • Emergency accessibility 24 hours a day via cell phone

  • Supervise Duke TIP staff at the assigned program site

  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein

Educational Requirements

A bachelor’s degree is required. Experience with high school students in a teaching or residential life supervision capacity is strongly preferred, as is experience with programs and/or curricula for academically gifted students. Experience with leading a group, arranging travel logistics and familiarity with the program site are valued.
