The Group Leader is responsible for efficient program operations for Field Studies. This position maintains high visibility within the program, attending all events, activities, and field trips, observing classes, leading staff meetings, and serving as the main student supervisor during the field study. The Group Leader is the main parent contact during the program, coordinates all course logistics, and communicates schedules to students and staff during the program. The Group Leader confirms field trips and all aspects of the course itinerary, plans team-building and residential activities, and assures the safety and inclusion of all students. The Group Leader must be available twenty-four hours each day, seven days a week to respond to crisis situations. Staff can expect approximately twelve working hours of time off per week. The Group Leader’s role varies depending on the location of the field study.


A bachelor’s degree is required. Experience with high school students in a teaching or residential life supervision capacity is strongly preferred, as is experience with programs and/or curricula for academically gifted students. Experience with leading a group, arranging travel logistics and familiarity with the program site are valued. Strong leadership abilities and supervisory experience are required. Applicants must possess excellent organizational and planning skills, attention to detail, fiscal management experience, and the ability to work independently. Applicants must possess a genuine interest in the academic, social, and emotional growth of adolescents, exhibit maturity and a positive attitude, and be willing to serve as a role model for students. Commitment to working in a team environment is a must. There is a driving requirement for all field studies. Eligible drivers must possess a valid US or Canadian driver’s license, be at least twenty-one years old, have an approved driving record on file, and be willing to drive students in Duke TIP vehicles. CPR certification is a requirement for this position, and applicants may work with the main office to meet this requirement. Group Leaders must live in program-sponsored housing and sleep in their assigned rooms each night. For positions traveling outside the United States, a valid passport is required and applicants must meet all visa and travel requirements.
