New Site at Rollins Builds on a Rich Tradition
At Rollins College in Orlando, our newest site for academic-year programs, there’s an interesting campus tradition.
It’s unlike many traditions in that it doesn’t have a set date or time—it’s completely random. They call it “Fox Day.” On any given day of the academic year, the president of Rollins will place a statue of the school’s fox mascot at a location on campus. When students see the fox, they know it is officially “Fox Day,” and all classes are cancelled. It’s a creative, unexpected, engaging tradition that keeps students aware and on their toes: the perfect metaphor for the school’s approach to learning.
The college behind “Fox Day” was chartered in 1885 as a coeducational liberal arts college and happens to be the oldest recognized college in the state of Florida. It’s one of the most prestigious, too. For twenty consecutive years, Rollins has been ranked among the top two regional universities in the South and first in Florida by U.S. News & World Report.
And while “Fox Day” may seem irrelevant in comparison with these distinctions, it reveals what’s really important to Rollins—its students.
Being that Rollins shares the same deep commitment to students as Duke TIP, we are happy to announce that we are now offering both Academic Adventures and Scholar Weekends at Rollins College. The next session for each program will take place in February and March of 2017.
One of the coolest things about our programs, especially summer studies, is that students are able to experience the college life. At Rollins, TIPsters will get to hang out on one of the top campuses in the nation. The eighty-acre campus, featuring Spanish-Mediterranean architecture, was named one of the "50 Most Amazing College Campuses" by The Best Colleges, 2011–2014. Rollins facilities include a four-level, fifty-four-thousand-square-foot library and a fine arts museum with six display galleries. All this makes it a great place for families to visit while their students are at TIP—and with Orlando only an hour’s drive away, it’s a great vacation and long weekend destination!
