EXPLORE® Test: Above-Level Testing
As a benefit of the Duke TIP 4th–6th Grade Talent Search, all enrolled fourth through sixth grade participants are eligible to take the EXPLORE test once each school year. For students who already excel on grade-specific tests, the knowledge gained from taking above-level tests like EXPLORE is invaluable. Gifted students often top out on grade-specific tests, leaving parents and teachers wondering just how far above grade level they can perform. The EXPLORE test, which was designed for eighth graders, is a better measurement of the academic levels of gifted students in grades four through six. It also gives them invaluable testing experience. And the EXPLORE test can help parents and educators better assess a student's academic needs by providing comparison scores to other Duke TIP students as well as eighth grade students nationwide.
Enrollment is now open for all new and existing 4th–6th Grade Talent Search participants. Test dates for the coming year include November 8, 2014; January 24, 2015; or February 21, 2015. EXPLORE testing requires an additional fee of $37. Learn more about test dates and enrollment here.
What to Expect
Students should expect the EXPLORE test to be challenging and parents should view it as a valuable diagnostic tool, rather than a barometer of intelligence. Though Duke TIP recommends EXPLORE testing, it is not required for participation in any of our talent search benefits or educational offerings.
Duke TIP EXPLORE testers who achieve a composite score at or above the 99th percentile are honored for their outstanding achievement by being invited to attend a state recognition ceremony in May or June.
